Paper Dahlias

Dahlias are an incredibly diverse species of flowers. Standing as symbols of inner strength and creativity, they are the perfect flowers to gift to loved ones. These paper dahlias are similar to peony-flowering dahlias - bright, colorful, high petal counts that may be curled as you see fit.
The template created for this particular flower will produce blooms that are roughly 4" in diameter. Dahlias range anywhere from small at 2" diameters to large dinner plate sizes! As with paper garden roses, foliage is not included.

Here's what you need:
Drawing paper
Craft scissors | Cutting machine
Magazine scrap page
Floral tape
Floral wire
Glue gun
Flower template (scroll to bottom)
Watercolor set (optional )
How to Make Paper Dahlias:
Cut out shapes using template, (1) sheet of 8.5"x11" paper creates one bloom.
Paint with watercolor. Let dry. Skip if using colored template.
Using scraps (remainder of cut-out sheet), form a ball. using an additional piece of colored scrap paper (a piece of magazine paper was used), wrap around ball & glue shut.
Glue ball center onto small petal shape.
Apply glue to base of ball center and glue petals so that they "hug" the center. Repeat with additional (2) small petal shapes.
Glue onto large petal shape. Apply glue to sides of ball center and glue petals onto base. Repeat with remaining (3) large petal shapes.
Glue wire onto back of bloom.
Cut slit in circle shape & glue on top of wire.
Wrap wire with floral tape.
These flowers were made with drawing paper, slightly thicker than copy paper with a rougher surface texture, which made for beautiful color gradients when combined with watercolor.
The dahlia templates provided include watercolor fills. If you would like to create more texturized blooms by hand-painting, download dahlia plain templates instead.
